Arnold B. Tein MD
October 21, 1928 - March 14, 2022
Arnold B. Tein, MD died suddenly and peacefully at home on March 14, 2022, surrounded by family. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 21, 1928. His mother, Anna Tein, died in childbirth, and he was raised and deeply loved by his grandmother, aunts, and uncles. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Monticello, NY (and also public schools in Brooklyn and in the Bronx). Dr. Tein graduated from Long Island University (LIU) in 1950 with a BS. He received a Masters of Science in Pharmacology from the University of Cincinnati in 1952. He was in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean conflict, and achieved the rank of Sergeant by the time of his separation. Part of his service included working in the Army Medical Research Lab. He then attended Medical School at the University of Louisville, graduating in 1958, after which he did his internship and surgical residency in Montreal, Canada at McGill and Montreal General. He returned to NY and did his residency in urology at NYU-Bellevue. From 1963 until he retired in 1990, he practiced urology in private practice and at what became known as Albert Einstein Hospital, among other hospitals in the Bronx. Throughout his 27 years in practice, he devoted himself not only to building a practice and caring for patients, but also to serving the community – regardless of a patient’s or family’s ability to pay. While at Albert Einstein Hospital, Dr. Tein was an Associate Professor of Urology and served on the Admissions Committee for Medical School and for Urology Residents; even after retirement, once he moved to Chapel Hill, NC, he continued to exercise his passion for teaching as an adjunct professor of urology and on the admissions committees for the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine and for the residency program in urology. Dr. Tein was well-respected and loved by his students and patients, and he felt the same. Throughout his entire life, he shared his love of medicine, patient care, and teaching by continuing to mentor and inspire medical students and residents. Arnold Tein was an accomplished photographer, loved all types of fishing (deep sea, fly fishing, ice fishing, etc.) and played golf. He was a life-long learner, always reading medical journals, philosophy books, learning about and experiencing all types of art and music. He felt strongly about culture and religion, enjoying the study of Torah and teaching Yiddish to young people. He deeply loved his family, friends, those who cared for him and who he took care of, and it was important to him to let them know that as often as he could. He had a great sense of humor and loved to hear people laugh. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marlene Alpert Tein; his son Michael Tein (Laurie Stein) and his daughter Naomi Ortega Tein (Carlos Ortega); his grandchildren, Paulina Tein and Gabriela Ortega; and Allen Smith.
