Adele Freitag's Obituary
Adele M. Freitag, 84, a loving mother, friend, teacher and Hadassah Woman of Valor, died on Oct. 11, 2025.
An elementary school teacher for 30 years at P.S. 21 in The Bronx, she delighted in playing guitar and singing (joyfully and slightly off key) with her young students. For her master’s degree she wrote a children’s book, The Square Egg, about the value of all people, especially those who might seem a little different.
Adele had a gift for making and keeping friends and until her very last days spent hours in the company of her new friends at The Bristal at Armonk and speaking by phone with lifelong friends, some dating back to childhood.
She loved to dance, travel and read and had an encouraging word and smile for everyone she met.
Adele was born June 29, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and Mills College of Education. She earned her master’s degree plus 60 from the College of New Rochelle.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norton Freitag, parents, Joseph and Sarah Levine, her aunt Ethel Sheldon and brother, Michael Levine.
She is survived by her devoted sons and daughters in-law, Howard and Debra Altschiller of Stratham, NH and Jon and Tami Altschiller of Pelham Manor, NY, step-daughters Carla Freitag, Jayne Morrell and Lisa Freitag-Keshet and six grandchildren: Marina, Connie, Allison, Melissa, Brady and Zachary.
Adele lived in Scarsdale, NY and moved to Majestic Isles in Boynton Beach, Florida upon retiring in 1995, where she and Norton enjoyed socializing with many cherished friends. She was a founder of the Hadassah chapter at Majestic Isles and was named a Woman of Valor by the national organization for her many valuable contributions.
After receiving a cancer diagnosis in 2022 she came north for treatment at Massachusetts General, which she received with inspiring calm and courage.
In her last phone call with a granddaughter she advised: “Choose wonderful.”
Adele was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend and will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 1:45 p.m at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Road, Boynton Beach, Florida, followed by a burial at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens, 11520, Florida-7 in Boynton Beach.
