Alan Hurwitz's Obituary
Alan Richard Hurwitz passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, at the age of 93 with his 3 daughters lovingly by his side during that last week.
Al was born in Hartford, Connecticut, where he lived during his early years. He graduated from Weaver High School, also in Hartford, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Connecticut. He raised his family in Bloomfield, Connecticut, moving to Delray Beach once his family was grown.
Al was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Mona. He was also predeceased by his parents, Irene and Raymond Hurwitz, and his son Lenny, whom he loved with all his heart.
Al is survived by his beloved daughters and their spouses: Iris and Bob Ward of Denver, CO; Sharon and Marc Litvinoff of Seattle, WA; and Beth and Richard Luciano of Fairfield, CT. He also leaves behind six grandchildren whom he was proud of and adored: Benjamin Ward; Lauren Ward-Gunn (Paul); Zachary Litvinoff; Joshua Litvinoff (Shamar); Isabella Luciano; and Richie Luciano. He also leaves behind his bother-in-law and sister-in-law Eddie and Linda Cushing, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Al was a loving and devoted husband, father and friend. He always had a smile on his face and went out of his way to support his family and friends. While his daughters were growing up, he was always part of their lives. In fact, one of the reasons he wanted to own his own business was so that he could be present with his family. He was also an animal lover. When growing up he had his own horse, and more recently he was a dog grandpa (and whisperer) to the eight dogs of his children and grandchildren.
Throughout high school and college, Al played tennis and was number 1 on the tennis teams. He continued to stay active outdoors throughout his life, playing tennis well into his 80’s. After that time, he was seen on the sidelines coaching the matches. He also loved following his favorite sports teams, most notably the Boston Red Sox and the UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Al served in the army for two years during the early 1950’s, earning the rank of Specialist third class. He was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Al carried on the tradition of being a pharmacist, following in his father’s and Uncle Mo’s footsteps. He worked alongside his father at Ray’s Pharmacy, and then later owned his own pharmacy, Alan Drug. He was always willing to give out sage advice to his customers or whip up a special remedy for a friend’s migraine. After selling Alan Drug, he purchased a smaller pharmacy where he would continue his chosen occupation. He stayed abreast of the latest pharmacy and medical trends even into his 90’s.
Al was an avid reader who enjoyed reading three novels a week, always taking advantage of his local library. He would often ask his daughters for reading recommendations, and they would discuss their opinions during their daily conversations. He loved to be challenged with word games to keep his mind sharp – crossword puzzles (which he completed in pen), Wordle, Sudoku, Connections. Although not known for his culinary skills, especially when his wife was a phenomenal cook and baker, he learned how to cook in his 90’s and was open to virtual cooking lessons from his daughters. Chili was his specialty. He was known for his sweet tooth, especially enjoying a piece of dark chocolate or chocolate ice cream as a snack.
Al stayed active in the community, and he and his late wife were proud of their volunteer work with their local synagogue, senior living facilities and Pap Corps.
The family sends their appreciation to Homewatch CareGivers of Boca Raton and their dedicated aides for the loving care for Al as if he were part of their family. They also want to acknowledge the unparalleled care and support provided by TrustBridge Care Center at Boca Raton.
The family will be having a private family burial in June. A celebration of life, where family and friends can honor Al, will be held later this summer in Connecticut.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable contributions in Al’s memory be made to Trustbridge Foundation – https://www.trustbridge.com, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33407.
