Alvin (Al) Smith's Obituary
Alvin (Al) Smith
09/10/1935-2/11/2021
We mourn the loss of Al Smith, husband of Sheila Smith, father of Minda (Ronald) Shaiman, Barbara Smith (Shashank Agtey) and Robert (Antoinette) Smith, brother of Murray (Rochelle) Smith, grandfather of Bryan (Katelyn) Shaiman, Gabrielle Shaiman and Michael Smith.
Alvin was the first-born son to Rachel and David. He grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, where at 15 years old, Al met the love of his life, Sheila.
He played clarinet and saxophone in the high school band with Steve Lawrence and spent summers in the Catskills, during high school summer breaks. He was also proud of his time as a DJ at a radio station WDOV Delaware.
He married Sheila in 1955. She was 2 months older than she was and he always loved to tell all who listened, she “robbed the cradle”. Al proudly served in the National Guard for 6 years. He retired as a Vice President of national manufacturing firm but always said “I’m just a salesman”. He had the gift of connecting with people and making them understand his point of view and over time, earned the nickname “Silk” Smith.
Sheila and Al spent most of their life and raised their family in NY, NJ and Penn until they retired to South Fla in 2003. Here he loved to play Poker with his Tivoli Men’s Club buddies, Blackjack at the Hard Rock Casino where his favorite past time was shooting billiards. He had an ongoing passion for all classic cars as well as futuristic automobiles.
His family was everything to him. Fiercely devoted, passionate, husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor and friend who will be missed dearly.
