BJ... modeled the way, inspired my heart, encouraged and empowered my intellect to challenge the process as woman, an educator, community representative and civil rights advocate. I taught for 46 years, the thousands of children I taught always had something of you in their experience.
My husband was a first cousin of Barbara's mother, and for years we would see each other in the family's wonderful cousins' club. It was during these that became aware of what a special person she was and developed both fondness and admiration for her. For many, many years we exchanged holiday letters, and Barbara kept me up to date on what was happening in the family. I know how devoted you all were to one another and how very much she will be missed.
Barbara was THE teacher who changed my life. She instilled in me a life long curiosity and love of learning. She awakened in me a love of history and current events and the desire to go everywhere and see everything. As a student in her first class as a teacher we formed a bond and a friendship that has lasted 60 years. She never forgot my birthday. And we shared many a spirited discussion about politics. She was a bright light for me, an inspiration. My tears cannot express my grief. How lucky I was to know her!
Barbara was a most devoted friend and sister(in law). We enjoyed so many years together, and I will forever miss her. There is a hugh whole in my heart!
