Burton Winkler's Obituary
Burton Winkler, son of Frank & Sadie Winkler, died peacefully in his sleep early in the morning on Sunday May 9th, 2021 at the age of 96. Burton was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 16th, 1924. Six years later his sister Marilyn was born, and despite the age gap, they remained close throughout their lives.
He joined the Navy at the age of 18 and served for 4 years, taking part in several of the World War II invasions, including the Battle of Okinawa in Japan as a Yeoman rank radio man. He was honorably discharged and shortly after met his life match in Miriam Winkler at the age of 23. After their first date, they both knew they had found their lifelong partner, and were married within a year. They went on to have a beautiful 73 year long marriage. During that time, they lived in places such as the Lower East Side, Queens, Baltimore, New Jersey, and finally Florida. In 1953 they adopted their daughter Jody Winkler and 3 years later, their son Frederick Winkler. Burt supported his family as a Sales Administrator in the transportation industry for many years, and used that to support a lifestyle that allowed him to fill his time with his family going to Yankee games, traveling to over 30 countries around the world, and regularly using his season tickets to attend the Opera and Philharmonic in New York City.
Burton Winkler was cultured, humble, kind, honest and loving.
Unfortunately Burton outlived both of his children, but is survived by his wife Mim Winkler, and his grandchildren, Leah Winkler Levy, her husband Jared Levy, and Corey Winkler. He will be deeply missed.
Services will be held this Wednesday, May 12th at 10:15AM at the South Florida National Cemetery. There will be a zoom set up for those not able to attend in person:
