Dr. Steven Bennett
There are so many memories I have of my cousin, Carol. She was 3 years older than I and the same age as my brother, Ronnie and they went to high school during the same years. Right after Carol married David, David was drafted into the US Army. It just so hapened that I, too, was drafted at that time and, although, in different Units, David & I were in Basic Training at the same time at Ft Knox, Kentucky. My mother came to visit me during my time in Basic and I remember that David gave my mother his new wedding band to give to Carol to hold on to until he returned. Must have been very emptional for a new bride to have her husband go off to the Army. Well, it all worked out for the Cohens. Carol was always so gracious and opened her home in Burke, Virgina to me when I had a 1 day meeting in D.C. She was very interested in the reason as to why I was in DC, and listened to my impassioned speech I was to give to a group of colleague doctors. Although she may not have understood the topic, she listened with an open mind and an open heart. I returned a few years later and stayed in a hotel near the offices in DC that I was to visit, since I had just announced that I was running for Governor of Nebraska. She wouldn't take no for an answer and wanted to take me out for dinner and at that time, to a new restaurant called Cheescake Factory. When we talked about why I was running for political office, she opened up her checkbook and wrote me a check for $1000.00 as one of my first campaign contrinutions. (I subsequently returned the contribution when I dropped out of the race several months later.) She always joked that although we came from the same Behnsch blood of our grandparents, she belonged to the short Bennetts and I was from the tall Bennetts. At age 13, I was a head taller than she was and she never grew any taller! Carol always called me Steven. Never Steve or Stevie. For that she was unique in my mind. In later years, Carol became my lifeline to our ancestors when I became involvd in Genealogy and it was Carol who completed the Pages of testimony on Yad Vashem years ago.She had a Heart of Gold and Love of Family. I will miss her.
You now are Taller than Me.
