I first met Mr. Bogdany as a child through my godmother, Kim, who is a close friend of his daughter, Erika. One summer, I took a trip with her to visit Ms. Erika and her family in New Jersey. Even though my visit was brief, I was welcomed with so much warmth and kindness by Erika and her entire family.
That trip has always held a special place in my heart because it was one of my very first experiences learning how to fish, an activity I later came to learn was one of Charles' greatest passions. He took me to a nearby lake and patiently taught me the basics. We didn't catch a single fish, probably largely because of me! But I left that day with something far more valuable: one of Charles' hats and a core childhood memory that I've carried with me ever since.
Like Charles, my own father served in the military and was on active duty during much of my childhood, which often meant he wasn't home. Looking back, I realize that this experience with Charles stayed with me for more reasons than I understood at the time. His kindness, patience, humility, and genuine care left an impression on a young boy that has never faded.
Those same qualities were clearly reflected in the family he raised. Even through life's more difficult seasons, his light never dimmed. It continues to shine through his children, his grandchildren, and in the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.
Thank you, Charles, for your kindness, your patience, and for giving me a memory that has remained with me for a lifetime. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
