Charlotte Schaechter's Obituary
Charlotte Evelyn Burros was born in Brooklyn, New York to Samuel and Jeannette Burros in her parents’ apartment on February 25, 1926. According to family lore, my grandmother gave birth before the fire department had a chance to get up the stairs! Tootsie was the youngest of five children and was preceded in death by Roz, Chuck, Bonnie, and Snooky. Please note that everyone in the family used a nickname! Tootsie attended PS 190 and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn in June 1942. With the war on, Tootsie went to work for the Navy Department. As the war wound down, she went to work for the R.H. Macy Company in their business department. She was even named Macy’s “Miss Legs” in 1945. In 1946, she met a handsome G.I. named Sam Schaechter and married him in March, 1947. 1948 brought a daughter and in 1950 a son. As the family outgrew their Brooklyn apartment, they moved to Valley Stream on Long Island in 1955. College graduations, weddings, and grandchildren followed, and in 1984 Charlotte and Sam moved to Florida, first living in Century Village in Boca Raton and then Huntington Lakes in Delray Beach. Sam passed in 2016, and in 2019, Charlotte moved to Sonata in Delray Beach where she was living until her death on Wednesday, June 29. Charlotte had a long and full life filled with work as a bookkeeper/cost accountant and volunteer as a poll worker for elections and active member of the Jewish War Veterans and Temple Beth Shalom, Boca Raton. She is survived by her daughter, Geri Bloch (Cookie), son-in-law, Paul Bloch; granddaughter, Alex Reichgott and her husband, Barry Reichgott; son, David Bloch; and three great-grandchildren, Jack, Gabe, and Cassidy Reichgott.
