the famous Al Badain's best Erasmus team and Tilden H.S. were tied 54-54 and the play I recall everyday of my life then happened as a timeout was called and Tilden had the ball with 4 seconds left and I was sitting in the upstairs track over the gym watching this unbelievable game and then the magic play giving Tilden their greatest win ever took place as Badain triple teamed Red
Goldstein but somehow the pass got to Red who took one dribble and then
unleashed a 22' jump shot over 6 Erasmus hands including future All American Doug Moe and as the buzzer screamed over the loudest shouting I've ever heard, Red's smooth pure shot swished thru the nets as Samuel J
Tilden for one day in their history became true champs of the hardwood.

I was sitting on the track above the basketball court at Tilden High School when Tilden and one of the greatest NYC teams of all time, Erasmus High led by Doug Moe and John Lee were tied at 54 each with 2 seconds left and Tilden called time out and Erasmus triple teamed Don Red Goldstein and yet the ball was thrown to Red and with just over a tenth of a second left Red jumped up from 23' out and 6 huge hands against him and swished the winning shot at the buzzer for the greatest win in Tilden's history.

I knew Don from the "JCC" in Commack, NY. We were "locker mates". Don was kind, intelligent and most sincere. He always engaged in good conversation. I remember first time we met. Don had locker opposite to me and when I turned around all I saw were these enormous shoulders. Big guy, big heart.

Don (Red) Goldstein lived a few houses from me on Amboy Street. He was a person that came from a sad childhood but with all the problems he succeeded and was always kind and grateful for his life. I was friends with his brother Heshy. Red was 5 years older then me but he always found the time to talk to us. He will be missed because of his talent and being a mensch.
