Dwora Bratstein's Obituary
Dwora Bratstein was an extremely strong willed person! At the age of ten years old, she had to live through the horror of living in a ghetto in Lodz, Poland, and then literally watching her family taken away from her to be exterminated, and SHE, had to find the strength to go on and get through years of the concentration camps, watching loved ones die right in front of her, and and all as a child. However, she made it through it, with her unbelievable strength.
In order to survive the War, the trade that was taught to her was to be a seamstress. Throughout most of her years, she sewed everything from clothing, to curtains, to halloween costumes. When she came to the US in 1962, with two children ages 5 & 6, with no monetary funds, and no education, she sewed hats, to add to the hard working, kind hearted, husband she had. She sewed suits, and all the clothes the whole family wore, for whatever occasion, whether it was for school, work, a wedding, etc.
She also had a gift for cooking. In the beginning, there weren’t too many options, being so poor, however, she cooked every single day and the family sat together every day for dinner. As children, living on the 6th floor of an apartment building, everyday we would yell up to her and ask if she had a quarter available that day for ice cream when the truck came around, and if so, she would throw it out the window…
The word social butterfly was probably made for her and Dad. Always surrounded by family and friends. Every Jewish holiday, everyone’s Birthday, and just to be with friends, was of utmost importance to her and for the family.
She was a dedicated wife, worked hard being a mother of three, not even knowing what a Mother was all about, since she grew up without one. When Dad was sick, she showered over him, above and beyond, and took care of him.
Her Grandchildren brought out a whole different loving, hugging, supportive, giggly, above and beyond kindness, like no other. She adored all her Grandchildren and they all adored her. And, then, she went even further to have Great Grandchildren. They all Loved GiGi…
REST IN PEACE, YOU WERE VERY LOVED AND WILL BE SORELY MISSED…
