Edie Bauch's Obituary
Edie Bauch, 89, of the Royal Landings section of Coral Lakes in Boynton Beach, passed away Sunday March 15, 2020, just short of what would have been her 90th birthday this Thursday. Her parents emigrated from Poland in the late ‘20’s and ran a dry-goods store in Williamsburg. Her father and mother passed away when Edie was 15 and 17years old respectively, and worked at the store while attending Brookly College at night. After awhile, she sold the store, almost finished college, and married her beloved Selwyn at the age of 20.
With her children still in elementary school, and determined to obtain her degree, Edie went back to school, earning both her undergraduate degree in math, and her Master’s in education. When her husband moved his business to Puerto Rico, Edie and family followed. Returning to New York in the mid 1970’s, Edie could foresee computers were the wave of the future and got in on the ground floor taking a class offered by Grumman, learned Cobalt and Fortran computer languages and became a computer programmer. She landed a job at CitiBank in their burgeoning IT Department and was soon recruited away by DoubleDay Publishing -- running their entire main frame system. She was on call 24 hours a day to deal with any problems, an unheard-of position for a woman, let alone one of 50+ years old. After DoubleDay sold to Bertlesman she went to work for The Greater, a mortgage bank in NY, becoming their highest producer and and was even featured in some of their newspaper ads.
In retirement, Edie never gave up exercising her computer and mathematical skills, doing complex calculations in her head and helping friends with figuring out their investment portfolios , using computers to keep in touch with their families, and even helping friends in purchasing their computers. As recently as 15 years ago it was not unusual to find Edie crawling around on the floor wiring up a new computer for someone she knew. Edie was also an artist, a seamstress, and knitter -- creating clothing, curtains and bedspreads, and sweaters with the most complicated patterns she’d create herself, because “knitting is just mathematical”. Edie was very involved with, and served on the board of directors for PapCorps Cancer Research Coral Lakes chapter.
Edie leaves her beloved husband of 70 years, Selwyn; her devoted children Michael (Barbara) Bauch and Phyllis (Bob) Taylor; loving grandchildren Frank, Jake, Jamie, and Leanne and great-grandchildren Ryan and Clara Lynn; and dear brother-in-law Marvin Bauch. Chapel services will be held 12:15 PM Wednesday March 18, 2020 at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Rd., Boynton Beach, FL 33437 followed by entombment at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens in Boynton Beach. Those wishing to honor Edie with a memorial contribution are asked to kindly consider sending a donation to cancer research, check payable to PapCorps, and send to Coral Lakes Clubhouse, c/0 Pearl Pearlmutter, 12751 El Clair Ranch Rd., Boynton Beach, FL 33437.
