Ellen Janet Sherman's Obituary
Ellen Janet (Gursky) Sherman, 77, of Boynton Beach, Florida, passed away on December 26, 2018 with her family by her side.
Ellen was born in 1941 in New York, the daughter of Samuel and Henrietta (Blatt) Gursky. She graduated from Cortland College and Florida Atlantic University with education degrees. She married Richard Sherman in 1968, and celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. Their family, along with many friends, have lost a wonderful human being. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, a great movie, anything purple, and a good meal with a chocolate dessert. Her passion in life was her family, whose company she always enjoyed. More than anything, she lived for her grandchildren. Her energy and excitement was always the highest when they were around.
Ellen began her teaching career in the mid-1960’s as a reading teacher, focusing on students with special needs and from less affluent homes. She put her career on hold for a decade, while she had her family, and then resumed it in the Broward County School System continuing for over 20 years. After more than a decade as a middle school reading teacher, Ellen returned to school to earn her second Master’s Degree at the age of 51, and finished her career as a Guidance Counselor. Ellen retired in 2003 and enjoyed traveling, her community of Cascade Lakes, and taking care of her five precious grandkids. Her life has ended way too soon, but her love and memory will be cherished by her friends and family forever.
Those who will miss Ellen the most include her husband Richard, her sons- Michael Sherman and his wife Courtney, and Steven Sherman and his wife Vicki, grandchildren- William, Matthew, Timothy, Brian, and Kaitlyn. She leaves a sister Rita Ort and her family (Ed, Stuart, and Jerome), and numerous other family members and friends.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents Samuel and Henrietta.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Ellen’s life will be held on Monday, December 31, at 11:00 am at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Road in Boynton Beach, with interment following the memorial at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens, 11520 State Road 7, Boynton Beach, FL 33473. Shiva visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. that evening at the home of Ellen and Richard.
