Elliott Beckerman's Obituary
El was born to David and Lydia Beckerman on the 21st of May, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY. His beloved sister, Randee, was born 4 years later and they maintained a close relationship throughout his life. El grew up in Brooklyn and was always handy, curious and adventurous. His brain was his biggest asset. At age 9, he even snuck into the basement of his grandparent’s house and fixed the exhaust system of their heating pipes! El was always mature beyond his years and from an early age, he learned how to manage people. At age 12, he oversaw a cabinet installation project.
One day, he took an aptitude exam in school and scored so high that he was immediately recruited to Brooklyn Technology High School. While attending a friend’s sweet 16 party, he met the love of his life, Leah. After their first kiss that evening, Lil told her mom that she met the man she was going to marry. Lil proposed to El 4 years later and they were married at the age of 21, on January 30, 1969 in Brooklyn. They had their first child, Elizabeth at age 23. Jennifer followed shortly when they were 25, after which they moved to Levittown, Long Island. Their son, Michael was born when they were 29 and completed the family.
El studied at Ohio State and then Long Island University, where he majored in Sociology. Later, he served with excellence as Chief of Service for 33 rewarding years at Long Island Developmental Center, Bronx Psychiatric Center, and Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. He continued honing his managerial skills and oversaw the construction and implementation of housing units for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Suffolk County, Long Island.
El and Lil loved raising their children and made the most of their time together - from camping trips to summers in Montauk. El was fortunate enough to retire at age 55, when they sold their home in Plainview and moved from Long Island to Boynton Beach, 22 years ago. As original homeowners, El promptly took on a leadership role in their development and formed a strong foundation for his community. Always looking for a stimulating challenge, he began to survey nursing homes for the state of Florida. For several years thereafter, he worked as a transitional manager for high end condominium buildings, working through any issues they had - from Trump Towers to the Turnberry Resort. Throughout this time, he and Lil traveled as much as they could around the world. The couple especially loved cruising, with over 37 cruises under their belt.
However, El’s greatest pleasure was watching his grandchildren blossom. El treasured spending time with his grandchildren and loved being a grandfather to each one with their own special bond. He loved following Matthew’s climb into the corporate world, following Sarah’s worldly adventures, never missed one of Sammy’s lacrosse or Aaron’s hockey games, spending time with Jonathan and Daniel, following Sylvie’s path to college, Eva’s flight plans, and hanging out with Liam.
El’s one vice was his unwavering addiction to Candy Crush - setting an earth shattering record of level 15,000! He loved puzzles and fervently played the NYT games from Letter-boxed to Wordle and shared his accomplishments with the family on a daily basis. He was also an avid reader, averaging one book per week! He loved his baby Bella, their 12 year old maltipoo, who sat with him on his bed and didn’t leave his side until the very end.
El was a fighter and never gave up on his battle with pancreatic cancer. He wanted so badly to live and received chemotherapy for three and a half years. He insisted on getting chemo even a week before he passed. His strength and resilience will continue to inspire us daily and will live in our hearts forever.
