Dr. Eugene Sherman, M.D.'s Obituary
Dr. Eugene Sherman, M.D., of Boynton Beach, Fla., passed away on March 6, 2018 with family by his side. He was 91. Born on April 27, 1926, Dr. Sherman was raised in the working class city of Elizabeth, New Jersey. Amid family tragedy – and as a boy of just six – he decided he was to become an OB/GYN. Dr. Sherman graduated from Jefferson High School in 1944. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a radio operator aboard a B-29 Superfortress bomber in Guam. Attaining the rank of sergeant, he was honorably discharged in 1946. Dr. Sherman enrolled at Rutgers University, from which he graduated in 1949. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree, Dr. Sherman was granted a research fellowship in neuroanatomy at Chicago Medical School. He obtained a Doctor of Medicine in 1954. Following an internship at Chicago’s Michael Reese Hospital, Dr. Sherman served his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1958, he entered practice with Dr. Robert Ellison in Mansfield, Ohio, where he also raised a family. After leaving private practice, Dr. Sherman joined IBM as medical director for the Northeastern United States. He retired to Boynton Beach in 1994. Beyond medicine, Dr. Sherman was a gifted playwright, lyricist, and children’s book author, and produced variety shows for decades. He was a lover of the music of Cole Porter and Mel Tormé. Later in life, he traveled the world. Dr. Sherman was predeceased by his mother, May Schwartzbach, brother, Donald Ehrenberg (Bobbie), of Clark, N.J., and the family who raised him – Rose and Louis Ehrenberg, Helen Feinswog, Edith Gazevitz, and Ida Schwartzbach. Dr. Sherman is survived by his wife of 27 years, Linda M. Sherman, sister, Barbara Sheldon (Larry) of Westfield, N.J., daughters and their spouses – Dori and Alra Reeves of Aubrey, Texas, Jill and Tom Skeem of Kimberly, Idaho, Amy and David Pliner of Marblehead, Mass., and Jennifer and Ariel Loayza of Burke, Va., nephews Michael Ehrenberg (Ann Marie) of Pennington, N.J. and David Ehrenberg of Rahway, N.J., niece, Deborah Andersen (Taw) of Oakley, Utah, and grandchildren Jared Pliner (Kate) of Boston, Mass., Hallie Pliner (Cameron) of Boston, Mass., Sydney Pliner of New York, N.Y., Emma and Katie Loayza of Burke, Va., and Leroy Reeves of Aubrey, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 11, at the Beth Israel Memorial Chapel (Boynton location), 11115 Jog Rd., Boynton Beach.
