Gail August Greenberg's Obituary
Gail August Greenberg passed away Tuesday evening, with her loving family at her bedside.
Gail was born on August 23, 1939, in Philadelphia, the only child of Morris and Bella August.
Gail grew up in the Logan neighborhood of Philadelphia and attended Olney High School before
becoming the first in her family to attend college at Temple University. She graduated from
Temple with a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. After graduation she obtained a Masters in Psychology,
also from Temple, in 1964. She then pursued graduate work at Brandeis University, in
Massachusetts. It was at this time, September 1964, that Gail met her beloved husband Edwin
Greenberg, also of Philadelphia, who was working in Boston. After meeting on a blind date, the
two fell in love and married a year later. They remained happily married and best friends until
her death. They had 2 children, Mark and Bruce, who adored their mother and for whom Gail
was always a large and beloved presence in their lives.
In addition to raising her sons, Gail performed graduate research involving human perception,
child psychology, and designing standardized tests. She was a gifted diagnostician who treated
patients in both English and Spanish. Gail put her career on hold so she could devote her full
energy to raising the sons she adored. Upon returning to her career, she worked at a number of
mental health centers in the Boston area. She helped countless patients during her years before
retiring in 1996.
After retirement Gail and Ed followed their shared passion of cultural and world exploration,
spending many years traveling to 6 of the 7 continents. In 2004 they moved to North Palm
Beach, Florida. There she made many more friends, and continued to be active intellectually
and civically. She was active in the Temple Beth El community in Sudbury, MA, and continued
to engage in her Jewish faith at Temple Judea in Palm Beach Gardens. Gail loved to entertain,
and truly enjoyed the company of her many friends, both old and new. She volunteered as a poll
worker and pursued her enjoyments of reading and all table games. She was a self taught chef
of impressive skill, and loved hosting parties and cooking for guests. However, she was most at
ease when surrounded by her family and 5 grandchildren who adored her. Her love and energy
for them was all encompassing and created the foundation for the wonderful and loving adults
they grew to be. Gail is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, her son Mark and wife Heidi Greenberg, of Boynton Beach, Florida, son Bruce Greenberg and wife Carrie Hayes-Greenberg of Wayland, Massachusetts, and her grandchildren Jared, Elizabeth, Ethan, Erin and Zachary.
The funeral will be held at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Road, Boynton Beach, on
Thursday, June 6th, at 2:30 PM.
Shiva will be held at her home Thursday from 5-8 PM and
Friday from 2-5 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to Jewish Women’s Foundation of the Jewish
Federation of Palm Beach County (please enter “Jewish Women’s Foundation” on any
