Dr. Harvey Alpert's Obituary
Dr. Harvey Alpert, 88, passed away peacefully on March 14th, with his family by his side. He was born in Massachusetts to Alec and Bella Alpert. Harvey graduated from Boston University with a BA in 1950 and the University of Florida with an EdD 1955.
Harvey taught at Michigan State University from 1955-56. He began his long career at Hofstra University, Long Island, NY in 1956. He was a psychologist in the Reading Clinic and was, also, an advisor and mentor to many doctoral students. Harvey became chair of the Reading center, teaching many educators reading techniques to use with their students. Harvey became a full professor and was honored with a number of awards while at Hofstra University. He received the Distinguished Service Award in 76-77, was named Teacher of the Year in 87-88, and was given a service award from the Nassau Reading Council in 1990.He retired in 1991 as Professor Emeritus. During his career, he performed consulting services for many school districts on Long Island as well as the University of Florida.
Harvey and his wife were long time residents of Old Bethpage and Bay Shore on Long Island, NY. Harvey was very involved in community activities. He served on the temple board of Suburban Temple in Wantagh, NY, eventually becoming President. The Temple Board at Suburban Temple honored Harvey with the Masada Award for his support of Israel. Reform Judaism was important to him. He served on committees with the UAHC (now URJ) to help further the New York region’s work.
Harvey moved with his wife to Boynton Beach, Florida in 1994. Harvey quickly became active in his community joining most of the organizations. He was a “Man of All Seasons” serving as president of the Music Society, President of the Bowling League, as well as singing in the chorus. Harvey loved this community, his neighbors, and many friends.
Harvey and his wife joined Temple Shaarei Shalom after arriving in Boynton Beach. He continued his love of the Jewish community by serving on the Membership Committee, Caring Committee and serving as Co-Chair of the New Member Sabbath.
Harvey loved his grandchildren. He spent as much time as he could with them, spoiling them with love and affection.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gerness (Gerry), his children Eric (Lisa), Gary (Kelly), and Amy (Dr. Karl Drehobl); his grandchildren Marissa, Ariel, Michael, Rebecca, Katie, and Landon.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the loving care from Trustbridge, their doctors, nurses, and staff, who cared for Harvey at his home during the last few months of his life.
The service will be held on Friday, March 16th at 1:45pm at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Road, Boynton Beach, FL. Shiva will be held at the home of the Alpert family.
