Herbert Schiff's Obituary
Herbert Schiff 91, a native Staten Islander, and a resident of Parkland, Florida peacefully passed away on Wednesday July 3, 2024.
He is survived by his sons Hal Schiff (Julissa Bustillo), David Schiff, and daughter Laurie Portal (David). Blessed with five grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah, Sammi, Daniel, and Spencer. A loving sister Marie.
He and his wife Ann (predeceased) built a beautiful 45 years of marriage together.
Herb was born on October 24, 1932 on Staten Island, New York to his parents Herman and Berdye Schiff. A graduate of Port Richmond high school, Bradley University BS, and Staten Island College BS Nursing.
Herb was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. Upon his discharge he returned to Staten Island to manage the family furniture store. At the age of 50 he returned to school and received his nursing degree, and worked in Intensive Cardiac Care for the next 30 years.
Volunteerism was a cornerstone within his family, and Herb was an active participant at the SI Jewish Community Center, coaching basketball and supporting art shows. And was a board member.
Through philanthropic endeavors, he contributed and sponsored local sports teams, and local high school graduations.
Herb enjoyed playing basketball, softball, swimming, golf, bowling and general physical activity. He was also a junior ranked bridge player. He had an eye for photography and was often called upon to document and capture events. He loved to garden and cook and nothing delighted him more than to share.
He possessed a tremendous sense of humor and infectious laugh, unselfish caring for others and had a deep love for his family and friends.
We were blessed to be touched by him. We will miss him.
