HOWARD BALGLEY's Obituary
Howard Balgley, age 93, of Boynton Beach, Florida passed away on June 24, 2022. He is survived by his beloved wife Paula Balgley, his son Jonathan Balgley and his wife Christina Coughlin, his daughter Madeleine Balgley and her husband Martin Eskenazi, five adored grandchildren: Ethan (Samantha), Melissa (Brian), David, Daniel, and Benjamin; and two much loved great-grandchildren: Asher and Willa.
Howard’s early life was difficult. His father passed away when he was 5 years old, during the Great Depression. He lived with his older brother, and his mother and grandmother, with limited resources. His brother served in the US Marines during WWII, and Howard cared for his mother and grandmother during that time and after. He graduated from high school with difficulty from working many hours to support them, and later graduated from CCNY majoring in history, which he loved. He became an optician and this career served him well for a long time. He volunteered to join the US Army during the Korean War, and soon after arriving in Korea he was shipped over to France where the army needed opticians and where he served the remainder of his enlistment. After he returned, he met his wife Paula Balgley (nee Wolff) at a wedding. They were married for 64 years, and loved each other deeply. Howard joined and later co-owned the family business, Paul-Art Press, serving as the company’s primary salesperson. He enjoyed meeting and talking with the customers, and walking the streets of Manhattan. Howard’s work was always in the service of taking care of his family. He gave all of his effort to ensuring that they (we) would be safe and secure and wouldn’t have the difficult upbringing that he had. He succeeded in that, to the degree that he could retire in comfort. In his later life, he and Paula enjoyed their Montauk beach house and their home in the Palm Isles community. Howard particularly enjoyed participating in the history club. Howard was “a character” and would light up any conversation. He will be dearly missed.
