Howard George Soloff's Obituary
Howard George Soloff
Born on April 30 1935 to Celia & Louis Soloff in Brooklyn. NY, who are since deceased.
Howard attended George Washington University’s PreMed Program.
He served in the US Army Medical Hospital in Germany as an Assistant Dental Surgeon as well as delivering a baby for one of GI’s visiting wife.
While doing air evacuation of wounded soldiers to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital Howard was the medic in charge who admitted President Eisenhower to the hospital when the President had his heart attack.
After Howard’s discharge from the Army, he subsequently changed his majors to Accounting & Finance and graduated from Pace College.
Honing his skills and expertise in this field, Howard worked with then Governor Rockefeller for the New York State Urban Development League, and went on to become 1 of only 3 Planned Unit Community Developers in facilitating the building of Radisson, Roosevelt Island in New York and the planned community of Twin Rivers in New Jersey, which was a Kendall development.
One of the main reasons Howard switched his majors was because he met Sunny a Registered Nurse, and wanted to marry her immediately and not spend many more years in medical school. They were married within the year.
He and Sunny had 2 children, Andrew Marc a son, and daughter Cheryl.
Unfortunately, Andrew Marc predeceased Howard & Sunny.
Howard was a stock broker with Merrill Lynch for many years. He then managed the insurance division for Harry Helmsley of Helmsley-Spear for several years.
Within a few years, they relocated to the suburbs of Manalapan, NJ. Not one to sit around, Howard was finally able to fulfill his life long love and passion for Aviation and became an Instrument Rated Pilot and Instructor. He taught ground school not only at the airport but in the high school as well for adult education.
Upon retirement in South Florida, he became the Senior Flight Instructor at
Pompano Beach Air Club and Boca Raton Airport as well as, certified as an FAA Safety Pilot.
A very popular program called Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was the basis for an FAA program called Who Wants To Be An Airman.
Contestants had to have vast knowledge of all aspects of flying, aviation history, aerodynamics and every aspect pertaining to flight. This contest was held at MovieCo Theater in Boca Raton, Florida.
Of the many contestants who appeared on the show, Howard was the WINNER of the tournament. His prize was an all expense paid 2 week vacation on the Explorer of the Sea Cruise Ship. Needless to say it was a fabulous vacation for both Howard and Sunny.
The show was so popular that, it was shown to servicemen here and abroad.
He thoroughly enjoyed living in South Florida for the past 26 years never needing to wear long pants or shovel snow.
After 3 years of valiantly battling cancer, Howard died on Saturday 11/16/19 while his wife Sunny & daughter Cheryl were holding his hands.
