Hyman Hillenbrand's Obituary
Hyman Hillenbrand, beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2025, at the age of 85.
Hyman was the eldest child of Miriam and Isaac Hillenbrand and a devoted big brother to Jody Hillenbrand (Evelyn). Hy is survived by his wife, Francine Carol Hillenbrand, his children—Scott (Raquel), David (Sharon), and Jeffrey (Hillary)—and his grandchildren: Lucy, Shannon, Douglas, Riley, Quinn, and Gabby.
His life was filled with purpose, adventure, and love. Born in the Bronx, Hy was drawn to the crack of a baseball bat, the thrill of flying, the spotlight of the theatre, and the delight of the waves at Rockaway Beach. It was here that he encountered a young woman with striking blue eyes as he operated a game of chance: “Hook the Bottle.” She declined to play but gave him a chance instead. That moment began a love story that would span more than six decades.
Hyman graduated from Hunter College and went on to earn his law degree from Fordham University. Hy was deeply respected in his field of transportation law: he spoke at many national conventions and was named in a landmark decision at the Supreme Court level. Despite his accolades, Hy was humble and grounded.
Always thinking of others, Hy enjoyed shopping for items that would make those he loved happy. He was a quick-witted storyteller with an encyclopedic mind, who instilled in his children and grandchildren the same values that guided his life: hard work, justice, and the importance of family.
In 1992, Hy and Fran traded snow boots for sandals and moved from New York to Florida. Upon retirement years later, Hy enjoyed planning trips for the two of them. They traveled the world, often by cruise ship, always hand in hand.
After suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for several years, Hy has set sail on his final journey. His example will continue to shape generations of his family to come.
