IRENE STERNHEIM's Obituary
Irene Sternheim, of Boca Raton passed away on April 17th, 2018, at 98.
She was an educator who touched the minds of countless students for over 30 years. After receiving a master’s degree from Hofstra College in New York in the 1960’s, she began teaching Spanish in Uniondale N.Y. and became the first female chairman of the language department.
She was an avid traveler who often studied abroad and brought back stories of her adventures to her students, many of whom remember her fondly many years later. She always expected the best efforts from her students, her children and the utmost of herself.
Irene was active in woman’s rights, politics, Jewish charities, and was an avid bowler into her 80’s.Irene was born on June 2, 1919 in the Bronx, N.Y. to Freda and Moses Leavitt. She received a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College in 1940, and married Gerald Sternheim in 1946.
She had 3 children and moved to Baldwin N.Y, where she lived for 30 years. Irene was pre-deceased by her husband Gerry and her daughter, Claudia. She is survived by her daughter Emilie Yunger and son Bill (Lori) Sternheim; grandchildren Michal, Ilan, Rachel and Joshua Yunger; David, Gillian, and Andrea Sternheim, who all knew her as Nana. She was proud to have great grandsons, Jordan and Rory.
Services will be held at Beth Israel Chapel in Boynton Beach at 11 AM on Sunday April 22nd, with internment at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens thereafter. Donations in her honor can be made to Planned Parenthood or Hadassah.
