Jerry graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, and after serving honorably in the Army Air Corps (USAF) in Colorado around the Korean War, he worked with his father in his trucking business delivering gravel to the New Jersey shore. After marrying Lora in 1950, they eventually moved to Monroe Township NJ, where along with his father they built a house, barn and chicken coops, and raised a family. It was a good life; he worked hard and left very early to drive to New York once a week to provide bakeries with cracked eggs which Lora and daughters prepared in large containers kept in basement freezers.
Jerry was introduced to computers at Abacus Associates in New York City working with punch cards. He commuted to NYC by bus, train or drove, and later joined the Bruskin Organization in New Brunswick NJ. In 1975, he became manager of their expanded data processing division. He excelled in IT, programming, statistics and marketing research data processing. Jerry took special training in computer design, programming and mathematical statistics, and provided his wisdom to some of the most respected names in the service bureau industry.
He was a volunteer for the Chevra Kadisha (burial society), member of Congregation Sons of Israel (now Congregation B’nai Israel) for 65+ years, and enjoyed their men’s club programming and bagel and lox breakfasts. Jerry was physically fit his entire life and enjoyed bicycling, walking, tennis and golf. Jerry excelled at creating stained glass artwork, going to the theater and enjoyed artistic performances of all types. He volunteered during his lunch hour at the George Street Co-op in New Brunswick, and also frequented the Princeton Health Food store where he bought his grains to bake bread and pizza.
Bill Boehm … Jerry, Richie Lanin and I shared a friendship that began in 1932 in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. It endured over all these years and we were never far from each other. Jerry was the center piece. Today, he would be called “The Cool Guy”. In all those years Jerry and I never exchanged a bad word. Jerry was and is my hero.
Jerry, RIP. You deserve it. My connection to the Deutsch family goes back over decades I remember them, and salute them all.
Lloyd Deutsch … Our parents had the two of us in 1928 and 1931, from what I know of those years it had to be rough to earn a living and raise two kids. We all made it through during the younger years. Eventually we both got married and raised our own children. Jerry moved to Monroe Twp, NJ; we moved to Queens, NY. Every year our families were together for Passover, Thanksgiving and other special occasions. We only lived about 60 miles apart, under two hours at 3 in the morning. But at normal holiday hours, 4 to 5 hours away from each other. We persevered over the years. Looking back all the happenings were well worthwhile and another part of our families upbringing. Jerry thanks for being my older brother, we were lucky to have wonderful adventures together. Donations may be sent to www.bnaiisraelnj.org
