Dear Leah, Michele and……. and to all the family who loved Jerry,
We were so sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing and sad to know that his last years were filled with medical challenges. Marcel has wonderful memories of their years in Astoria and all that goes with being the first generation Americans living in a Hungarian environment.
When I married into the family, Jerry was a policeman; and while all the other cousins were trying to make it in the business world, Jerry chose another route. He was not only the best looking of the cousins but by far, the most creative. He had the confidence to build his own businesses.
We can remember being in his office supply store. And when we were in Florida, he took us to his laboratory where he had exotic little creatures that he was importing and selling. And how about his recognized talents with calligraphy . . . . truly a Renaissance Man.
We are so lucky to have a Jerry original that he mailed to us after being in our home for just four hours. It was before cell phones/cameras so it gave us an idea of how incredible his memory was; as well as his sense of color as the colors were the exact colors in our couch. We were just amazed by Jerry’s talents and the sensitivity of the wording on the piece. I think someone told me it was from Shakespeare. It’s dated February 2088.
I’ll write quickly of an incident shared by Jerry and Marcel. I believe Jerry was in Maryland for a calligraphy course. He and Marcel met for dinner. Marcel picked up the check. They were walking in the parking lot when they heard yelling, and as they turned around they saw their waiter chasing them with the bill in his hand. Marcel accidentally forgot to pay. Jerry kidded Marcel about that for years as it was a laughable experience for the cousins to share.
We send you our deepest sympathy on your loss, but we are glad we’re filled with memories of the Jerry who was truly ONE OF A KIND!
Thinking of you all,
Marcel and Vivian
