Dr. Leonard & Edith Weiss' Obituary
Dr. Leonard (“Larry”) S. Weiss (December 17, 1921 – March 24, 2019)
Mrs. Edith (“Edee”) R. Weiss (October 29, 1922 – May 2, 2019)
Dr. Leonard Weiss and his wife, Edith, died in their home in Cooper City, Florida within six weeks of each other, after having been married for more than 76 years. Larry and Edee were raised in Brooklyn, New York and were high school sweethearts. They both graduated from Brooklyn College, and were married on December 19, 1942, two days after Larry’s 21st birthday.
While serving in the Army during World War II, Larry was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program and sent to Princeton University, Clemson College, and then Temple University where he completed medical school. He enlisted in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and served on the hospital ship, Consolation. In 1956, Edee and Larry moved to Middletown, New York with their four children, Gail, Robert, Richard and Kenneth, to open a medical practice specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.
During their 40 years in Middletown, Larry established a thriving medical practice, and was active in the New York State Medical Society, the Men’s University Club and Temple Sinai of Middletown. Edee raised the children and worked as a social worker for Head Start and the New York State Commission for the Visually Impaired. Edee was also elected to the Board of Education of Middletown, where she served as a proud member for 25 years.
In the late 1990’s, Larry and Edee moved to Boynton Beach, Florida to be near Larry’s brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Isadora Weiss and Edee’s sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Murray Leeds. In 2012, Edee and Larry relocated to Cooper City, Florida where they lived with their daughter in the same neighborhood as their granddaughter, Janet, and husband, Andy, and their two great grandsons, Jake and Ryan.
Family was the most important part of their lives. They are survived by their four children, six grandchildren (Janet, Michael, Danielle, Gregory, Alexa and Matthew), and two great grandsons. May they rest in peace, together, for all of eternity.
