Lucille Baker's Obituary
Lucille Baker, 99, died peacefully in her sleep at Sunrise of Marlboro in New Jersey on March 21, 2021. Lucille was born in The Bronx, New York on March 12, 1922 to the late Joseph and Stella Spiro. In 1946, she married the love of her life, the late Stanton K. Baker, with whom she had a
‘love affair through letters’ during World War 2. They spent the next 67 years building and savoring their life together. Lucille was the rock of her family and a most loving and supportive mother to son Stuart, and daughter Joanne who sadly pre-deceased her. Notably, she was a
seminal member of a matriarchy that extended from her own mother, Stella, now down through five generations of women. Lucille retired with Stan from New Jersey to Florida in 1992. Several years after Stan’s death in 2014, she returned to New Jersey and happily spent her last 4 years close to her granddaughter Samantha Murray and great-granddaughter Johanna.
Nurturing and encouraging her family were Lucille’s greatest joy and her life’s most important work. She derived great pride and delight in the successes of her children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. She worked as an executive secretary in the newspaper
and real estate industries while continuing to ‘run the household’ in exemplary fashion. She volunteered and ascended to leadership positions in several organizations. She had a great smile, an infectious laugh, and was incredibly easy to talk to. She was a wonderful, supportive, strong and positive person whose sharp mind and remarkable memory were always an amazing delight. She was self-educated, an avid reader, a liberal at heart, and remained deeply interested in her extended family’s lives, and the world at large, throughout her entire 99 years. Lucille was predeceased by her parents, her husband Stanton, her daughter Joanne, and her brothers Robert and Philip Spiro. She is survived by her son Dr. Stuart Baker and his wife Sandy; granddaughters Samantha Murray, Amanda Baker, and Jennifer Garland; step-grandchildren Courtney and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren Johanna, Kate, Sara Paige, and Harper. She is
also survived by nieces and nephews Karen Baker, Donna Baker, Peter Baker, Adam Baker, and Larry Spiro. The family would like to thank the Sunrise of Marlboro nurses and aides, as well as the staff of Homeside Hospice, for their loving care and expertise. Lucille will be buried next to her husband at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens in Boynton Beach, FL. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations in Lucille’s memory may be made to either the American Brain Tumor Association or ‘Butterfly Wishes’, affiliated with Homeside Hospice in New Jersey.
