Manfred Werbel's Obituary
Manfred (Fred) Werbel, of Boynton Beach and formerly of East Chicago, Indiana passed away on April 7th, 2013. Fred was born in Berlin, Germany on July 21st, 1927. Escaping the Nazis his family emigrated to the future State of Israel where he was raised. Fred served with the Israeli army during the War of Independence as a member of the Stern Gang. After the war he served as a Boson in the Israeli Merchant Marine on the Meir Dizengoff. He immigrated to the United States after marrying Phyllis (Cohen) of East Chicago, Indiana. Fred was the owner /proprietor of Milt's Store for Men in East Chicago, Indiana until its closure and his retirement. Fred was an active golfer, swimmer and tennis player as a member of the Aberdeen Country Club on Boynton Beach, Florida. He and his wife Sylvia also traveled extensively.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis and his parents, Max and Hannah Werbel and his father in law and mother in law, Milton and Mary Cohen. Fred is survived by his wife Sylvia (Simko), his sons Jonathan Werbel of Fishers, Indiana, Dr. Gordon Werbel (Marilyn) of Alpharetta, Georgia, grandchildren Phillip Werbel of South Bend, Indiana, Aaron Werbel of Chicago, Illinois, Marissa Werbel of Fishers, Indiana, Nathan Werbel of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Kenneth Werbel of Fishers, Indiana and his sister Leah Sarig of Tel Aviv, Israel. He is also survived by nieces Sharon (Kantor) Bogetz, Michelle (Kantor) Moser, and Rhonda (Kantor) Smith all of Chicago, Illinois and nephews Ehud Sarig and Ilan Sarig of Tel Aviv, Israel and Eyal Sarig of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Services will be at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel at 11115 Jog Road, Boynton Beach, FL on Tuesday April 9th at 12:45 PM with Rabbi Edward Bernstein of Temple Torah officiating. Graveside services will follow at Lakeside Memorial Park 10301 N.W. 25th St. in Miami, Florida. In Lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Fred's name be made to the Jewish National Fund 'Plant a Tree in Israel'.
