Marsha Ryzman's Obituary
Marsha Ryzman – 1926-2024
Marsha Jasinowski Ryzman died on January 31, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Bridgeport, CT
after a fall. She was 97. Her daughter, Jacqueline Ryzman Gold, was at her bedside. She is
survived by 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Marsha was born in Havana, Cuba in 1926. Her parents, Jacob and Anna Jasonowski (nee
Lunieksfky) had emigrated from Russia in 1924 after immigration to the US had become
severely restricted. Her sister Sonia was born two years earlier. Marsha’s parents separated
when she was a young child and Marsha was raised by her mother in Havana. Her sister was
sent to be raised by an aunt in New Jersey.
After Marsha graduated from high school, she and her mother immigrated to the US settling in
Paterson, NJ where they joined Sonia who was attending nursing school in Paterson. She met
her husband Maurice in Paterson, and they lived in Paterson and then East Paterson (Elmwood
Park) for over 30 years. In Elmwood Park they raised 3 children – Judy, David, and Jackie.
Marsha’s mother, Anna (Bubbie) always lived with Marsha and Maury and helped raise their 3
children.
While raising her 3 children, Marsha worked at several jobs over the years. Most notably
Marsha worked as the office manager, X-ray technician, translator, and administrator for a
Paterson orthopedist, Dr. Benjamin Barolsky. In that job, Marsha could use her intelligence
and people skills to run the practice - freeing Dr. Barolsky to focus on providing medical care.
Marsha and Maury were a vivacious, outgoing couple with many friends in the community.
They were both active in their temple and in many Jewish organizations. Marsha’s Latin spirit
and her love of dance always sparkled at any social event.
In the mid-1980s while still in their 50s, Marsha and Maury moved to Delray Beach, FL where
they lived together until Maury’s death in 2009. In Delray they were again active socially,
enjoyed meeting friends at the community pool and continued to travel.
Her 4 grandchildren would love to come visit and stay with ‘Nana’ and ’Pop-pop’ as their
parents would leave the kids and take off for a few days on their own.
Life became more difficult after Maury’s death in 2009. For several years, Marsha stayed in
Delray maintaining old friendships, but health issues and the desire to be with her children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts
prompted her to move to Connecticut to live close to her younger daughter Jackie and the
rest of the family.
Her final years were challenging as health problems mounted, but she was always buoyed by
visits from family. New technology allowed her to frequently do ‘Facetime’ with
grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and this always gave her joy.
A cryptside service will be held at 2:15pm on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Those wishing to honor Marsha with a memorial contribution are kindly encouraged to consider a donation to Mozaic Senior Life, 4200 Park Avenue Bridgeport, CT 06604.
