Dr. Max Weiner's Obituary
Dr. Max Weiner, Dean Emeritus of Fordham University's Graduate School of Education, of New Rochelle, NY and Delray Beach, FL passed away on February 14, 2021 at the age of 94.
Max was born on May 7, 1926 in Hartford CT. Max is survived by Gloria, his wife of 61 years and two children William and Jennifer, as well as five grandchildren – Alyson, Gregory, Alexander, Melissa, and Benjamin. He is predeceased by two sisters Pearl and Rose.
The son of a fruit peddler who emigrated from Poland, Max’s second language was English, and from those humble roots was bestowed the American dream.
A proud veteran of WWII for having fought in the Battle of the Bulge, Max benefited greatly from the GI Bill, which enabled him to begin his lifelong journey in education.
He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut in 1950, a Master’s degree from Trinity College (Hartford CT) in 1953 and a PhD from Yale University in 1957. Dr. Weiner began what would become a 50 year career of educating students of all ages. First, as a science teacher in Meriden CT, then a guidance counselor in White Plains NY, an Associate Professor at Brooklyn College, a Professor and Acting Dean at the CUNY Graduate Center and ultimately the Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University from 1981, retiring in 1997. Dr. Weiner was also a Consulting Educational Psychologist at SUNY Downstate Medical Center from 1967-1990. Max served on the board of the Arthritis Foundation and was President of the Association of Rheumatology Professionals. Dr. Weiner authored numerous publications and papers throughout his career.
We think about him all of the time. We know he would be so proud of the family he created. Our appreciation for his focus on education, family traditions and a good sense of humor continues to shape our lives.
