Maximo Handel
Max, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on November 12, 1929, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his late wife Fanny. He was the son of the late Bernardo and Malka Handel, and beloved brother of Luis of Miami Beach, FL. He is survived by his son Diego and wife Asya of Ormond Beach, FL; daughter Daliah (Handel) and husband Jason Weiss of North Palm Beach, FL, and his loving grandchildren Jason, Lee, Danielle, Jacob and Lara, who live in Gainesville, North Palm Beach, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Stanford, California. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews in Israel, Uruguay, Argentina, and Panama.
Maximo grew up in Buenos Aires and graduated from the University of Buenos Aires as a medical doctor. He specialized in psychiatry, treating adults, adolescents and children.
When he married wife Fanny, they lived in Montevideo, Uruguay for several years. They moved to Israel for most of the 1960s, then to the United States, ultimately settling in Florida. He and his family lived in Ormond Beach for over 30 years, and then moved to the Palm Beach County area to be closer to children and grandchildren.
Max spoke many languages fluently, and loved world traveling with family. He also loved dancing, especially the Tango. He had an infectious laugh and a keen intellect, always keeping up with world politics and furthering his curiosity by attending lectures and classes whenever he could. He also had a lifelong devotion to Judaism and the Jewish community.
More than anything else, he loved his family. He had a gentle manner about him and a calming presence. His family and friends will miss him greatly.
The family will hold a memorial at Beth Israel and he will be laid to rest at the Eternal Light Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties, the American Heart Association, or Hadassah.
