Melvin Berman's Obituary
Dr. Melvin Berman, 96, of Palm Shores in Boynton Beach passed away Sunday December 20, 2015. Born in April of 1919 in Staten Island to Fannie and Benjamin Berman, he attended Curtis High School – Class of 1935, New York University – Class of 1939 – member of Phi Beta Kappa, and Columbia University College of Dental Medicine – Class of 1943.
Dr. Berman was an Captain in the Army Dental Corps from 1943 – 1946, serving in Europe with the 416th Field Artillery Group and the 11th Infantry Regiment of the 5th Infantry Division. He was the recipient of the American Theater of Operations Medal, the European Theater of Operations Medal with two combat stars, and the Germany Occupation Medal.
Dr. Berman practiced dentistry on Staten Island from 1947 to 1989 where he served as President of the Staten Island Jewish Community Center, President of the Staten Island Lodge of B’nai B’rith, President of the Richmond County Dental Society, a Member of the Board of the Second District Dental Society of the State of New York, a member of the first dental staff of Staten Island Hospital, and an honorary member of the Medical and Dental Board of the Staten Island University Hospital.
He enjoyed tennis, golf, bowling, and shuffleboard. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan; his son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Randi Berman, and grandchildren Nathaniel and Sarah. He was pre-deceased by his son Howard Berman. Chapel services will be held 10:15AM Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Road, Boynton Beach, Florida with interment to follow in Eternal Light Memorial Gardens.
