Melvin Shuter's Obituary
Melvin (Mel) Shuter, MD, 93, died at his home on February 1, 2024. Mel was a man of many passions including family, his beloved and frustrating New York Yankees and Giants as well as playing golf and bridge with friends. He was a lifelong learner who enjoyed travel, opera and attending constitutional law classes at Florida Atlantic University.
Mel graduated from Brooklyn College in 1952 and the University of Geneva (Switzerland) Medical School in 1956. Having delivered over 5,000 babies, Mel was known for his dedication to his patients and his generosity of spirit.
Mel is predeceased by Phyllis Shuter, his wife of 45 years, and his brother Joseph Shuter.
Mel is survived by Helene, his wife of 24 years, his brother Gilbert Shuter (Eileen), children Bonnie Shuter, Sophia Munro, Andrew Shuter (Catherine), step-sons Leslie Zacks (Tanya) and Toby Zacks (Felicia), twelve grandchildren (Craig Singleton (Lindsay), Hannah Singleton, Amy “Rosie” Stanhibel (Jason), Zachary Shuter, Jared Shuter, Marla Munro, Lauren Matheny (Robbie), Madeleine Zacks, Andrew Zacks, Charlie Zacks, Lila Zacks and Chloe Zacks) and two great grandchildren (Henry Singleton and Nora Stanhibel).
A memorial service celebrating Mel’s life will be held Sunday, February 4th at 9:30 am at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 5808 West Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, Florida 33484 with a brief entombment service to follow Eternal Light Memorial Gardens, 11520 State Road No. 7, Boynton Beach, Florida 33437. Danielle Bensimhon of Temple Beth David will preside over the services.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Mel’s name be made to Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, PO Box 4224, New York, NY 10163.
