Milton Baum's Obituary
Milton W. Baum, of Lantana, FL, previously of Palm Beach and North Woodmere, NY died on August 3 in his 99th year. Milton was born to Martha and Samuel Baum in New York on March 17, 1920, neither the eldest, the youngest nor the only girl in a family of four children. Milton grew up in Brooklyn, New York and left college to enter WWII as a proud member of the U.S. Army in January, 1942. He served in the Pacific, island hopping from Tonga (where he had an in at the royal household) to the Philippines and multiple islands in between. He served until 1945, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, having eschewed an appointment to officer candidate school to stay with his group, an evacuation hospital. He was a proud Veteran his entire life.
Shortly before his separation from the service, jaundiced from anti-malarial medicine, he and a friend went to a hotel in the Catskills where he met Selma Goldman, the love of his life. They wed in 1947 and remained married for 71 years. Milton brought up his children with Selma on Long Island where he took great pride in all their accomplishments. He worked in manufacturing and as a consultant to the tobacco industry, among many other creative endeavors.
Milton is survived by his children Dr. Victor Baum (Dr. Lora Baum) of Charlottesville, VA and Dr. Cynthia Baum-Baicker (Mark Baicker) of Carversville, PA and four grandchildren, Emily and Sophie Baum and Sarah and Daniel Baicker. Interment will be private. Milton always wanted to live to 100. He enjoyed a good cigar (Cuban if possible) and fine vodka. Please make a donation to your favorite charity and lift a glass in his honor.
