Myra Lee Weiss' Obituary
Myra Weiss, a vibrant, creative, and deeply loving woman, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, leaving behind a legacy defined by family, artistry, and an unmistakable zest for life.
Born on April 4, 1934, in Chicago, Myra was the beloved daughter of William and Jeanette Friedman. She grew up alongside her sister, Florence Goodman, with whom she shared a close, lifelong bond. Florence and her husband, Arnold Goodman, raised two sons, Michael Goodman and Corey Goodman, who is married to Marcia Barinaga, and they remained Myra’s cherished nephews. Marcia Barinaga was a wonderful niece who brought much joy to Myra’s life.
From an early age, Myra stood out for her spirited personality. A self described tomboy in childhood, she developed a love for sports before blossoming into a confident and charismatic young woman. She was deeply drawn to the arts, especially theater, where she wrote and directed school musicals. She spent her youth surrounded by close friends, Bunny Cohen, Gloria Zakin, and Eunie Cutler, frequenting malt shops and enjoying the music of artists like Eddie Fisher.
Myra attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Her artistic promise was evident early on, and she was offered a full scholarship to study art at Sorbonne University in Paris, an extraordinary opportunity she was unable to pursue at the time.
Myra married young and began her family at the age of 22, welcoming her first two sons, Steven and Roark Weil. After eight years of marriage, she later found love again with Leo Weiss. Together they built a blended family that included Leo’s son, Roger Weiss, whom Myra embraced and loved as her own from the very beginning. She considered him a devoted and cherished son throughout her life. Together, they also raised their daughter, Michelle Weiss, who was deeply cherished and truly the apple of her eye. Leo Weiss preceded her in death in 2002, as did her beloved son Roger in 1999.
Myra’s daughter Michelle brought great joy into her life and also introduced her to a circle of women she deeply adored. Michelle’s partner, Negin Azarisoureh, was a beloved daughter in law whom Myra greatly admired and felt a strong kinship with, sharing a love of cooking, creativity, and fashion. Michelle also brought into Myra’s life Anat Klein Shamash, her childhood friend from Israel who affectionately called her her American mom, as well as Sharon Cohen and Tanya Sussman, her cherished California girls, with whom she shared many travels and treasured memories. Michelle’s childhood friend Renee Sigel also became part of the family, sharing many years of gatherings and celebrations.
In 2006, Myra married Anthony Manganiello, beginning a beautiful chapter that spanned two decades. Their love story began on Valentine’s Day, and this past February they celebrated 20 wonderful years together. They shared a deep love of travel and dance, exploring the world side by side and enjoying many cruises, including many dance cruises. Their life together was richly social, centered around dance clubs in the Carolina mountains and in The Villages, Florida, where they formed deep and lasting friendships.
Myra was a woman of many talents, an accomplished artist with a passion for painting and drawing, and a natural eye for interior design. She had a gift for transforming spaces with warmth and beauty.
She was also embraced with love by Anthony’s family. His three children, Kathleen, Lori Ann, and Anthony Jr., welcomed her wholeheartedly into their lives. She became a loving presence in the lives of their children: Kathleen’s children, Larry and Krysta; Lori Ann’s children, Peter, Joseph, and Arianna; and Anthony Jr.’s children, Amber, Anthony III, and Cecilia.
Myra was also a devoted animal lover. Her beloved dogs, MickyD, Mango, and Toby, were constant companions and sources of comfort and joy throughout her life.
Above all, Myra was devoted to her family and blended family. Her two oldest sons married, and she gained two daughters, Terri Dubbert Weil, Steven’s wife, with whom she shared a special bond and the joy of watching her three children grow, and Maxine Goldman Weil, Roark’s wife, whom she loved from the moment they met and who brought two more cherished grandchildren into her life. Together, they gave her five beloved grandchildren and, in time, six great grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy. She was the proud grandmother of Joshua Weil, Rebecca Weil Rich, Jacob Weil, Joseph Weil, and Samantha Weil, and warmly embraced their spouses, Tiffany Cobb Weil, Eric Rich, and Allie Parish Weil, as part of her heart and family.
Those who knew Myra will remember her as stylish, lively, and welcoming, with a larger than life personality and a radiant presence. She was strong willed yet deeply kind, glamorous yet genuine, a woman who filled every room with warmth, humor, and grace. Her love, energy, and spirit will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
