Sam Weiss' Obituary
Sam Weiss, 99, of Boca Raton, FL, formerly of Pottsville, PA, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by those who loved him, on November 20, 2021. Sam was a loving brother, husband, father, Zaida, and companion.
Sam was born to the late Fannie Friedman and Israel Weiss in New York City on March 31, 1922.
Sam served in the US Navy during World War II. After his service, he graduated from the Pratt Institute with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Sam spent nearly his entire career at United Metal Receptacle, relocating his family when the business moved from Brooklyn, NY to Pottsville, PA in 1956. Eventually becoming sole owner, Sam built United Metal into a company of over 150 people, which designed, marketed, and distributed waste receptacles around the world. Upon his retirement in 2003, the company remained under family ownership and leadership.
Sam took pride in being a leader in Pottsville’s Jewish community as an active member of Oheb Zedek Synagogue, and as a recipient of the Torch of Liberty Award from the Anti-Defamation League in 1999. He was also an influential member of many organizations in Pottsville, including the Board of Directors of the Good Samaritan Medical Center, the Manufacturers Association of Schuylkill County, Rotary International, and Pennsylvania National Bank and Trust Co. where he served as Associate Director. In his non-professional life, Sam was an avid golfer, enjoyed traveling the world, attended classes at FAU into his 90’s, and stayed current with world events through his nightly CNN viewing.
Sam is survived by his loving partner of 15 years, Alice Stern; his son Richard (Barbara McLaughlin); daughter Judith Levy (Dr. Jerome, z”l); grandchildren Rachel Weiss, Barry Weiss (Beth), and Rebecca Williams (Dr. Seth); his sisters Mildred Dien (Hyman, z”l) and Pearl Gelb (Sol, z”l); his four great-grandchildren, May, Nora, Henry and Max; and his large and adoring extended family – “The Whole Mishpacha” -- of which he was very proud. Sam was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, his childhood sweetheart, May (Tash) Weiss.
Sam’s Family wants to extend their deepest gratitude to Trustbridge Hospice Care of Palm Beach County.
