Sheldon (Shelly) Akers' Obituary
Sheldon (Shelly) Akers passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 6th, 2019, at the age of 90, in his home in Lake Worth, Florida.
He was the beloved husband of Decy Akers, father to Jonathan (Patty) and Andrew (Jennifer)Akers, and grandfather to Alexsander (Alexis), Emily, Alyson, and Jordan Akers.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 8th, 1929, Shelly spent the majority of his life in New York. He studied at Brooklyn College where he majored in merchandising. Before going into the workforce, Shelly served in the army during the Korean War and later, went on to work in the fashion industry as the VP of Sales for Isaac Hazan & Co. It was while working there that he met Dorese (Decy) Van Kell, the beautiful model he fell madly in love with. After knowing each other for a few months, the couple was married, later moving to Great Neck, Long Island where they started their family and built a home full of family, friends, and love. The couple was happily married for 65 years.
After retiring to Lake Worth, Florida, Shelly spent many years volunteering for the local sheriff’s department as a sergeant. During his service, he helped to develop the volunteer emergency response team (VERT) and was recognized for distinguished service and appointed volunteer emeritus.
Shelly was also heavily involved at his synagogue, Temple Shaarei Shalom, thoughtfully referred to as his “second home.” There, he helped organize the Brotherhood as well as celebrated many happy occasions with friends and his beloved wife.
Shelly will always be remembered for his sweet nature and kindness, his devotion and pride in his family, his ROMEO breakfast friends, and a smile that could light up the room.
In honoring Shelly’s memory, the family suggests you donate to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund at Temple Shaarei Shalom.
