SHELDON ZEIGER's Obituary
Sheldon “Shelly” Zeiger, 92, of Colonia, NJ and Deerfield Beach, FL died peacefully on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at Regents Park in Boca Raton, FL with all of his daughters by his side. He was a devoted husband, a loving, kind, and generous son, father, brother, uncle and cousin to so many. He was a doting, attentive and sweet grandfather.
Born in 1925 to Nettie (née Koenigsberg) and Nathan Zeiger, he grew up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn before moving to Newark then Colonia NJ with his first wife and mother of his children, Deborah Zeiger. Later in life, he married Loretta Zeiger and was a caring, generous and loving step-father to her four children.
As both a World War II and Korean War veteran, he initially served in the U.S. Navy on the Destroyer U.S.S. Case (DD 370) in the Asiatic Pacific at Saipan, Tinian, Guam, the Mariana Islands, Iwo Jima, Palau, and the Phillipines. During the Korean War he served on the Fulton class submarine tender, the U.S.S Nereus. He earned 4 Combat Stars.
“Shelly” spent 26 years dedicated to law enforcement. Achieving rank of Detective Sergeant during 15 years in the Newark Police Department, he kept the community safe in the 4th precinct and the 3rd (Market street) precinct as well as the Youth Aid Bureau. He worked tirelessly for 11 years in the Middlesex County Prosecutors office before retiring in 1981. In addition, he started “Shelly Installations” a service company installing household appliances.
He will be sorely missed by all the people whose lives he touched. He is survived by wife Loretta, daughters Robin Fellanto (Mark), Melanie Zeiger (David), Marin Zeiger Rands Inneo (Rocco), Jill Zeiger Costello (Brendan), stepchildren Karen Zockoll (Gary), Kevin Mostillo (Paula), Susan Tiongco (Eugene), and Joseph Mostillo (Peng).
Also missing Shelly are his beloved grandchildren Dina Cashin (Kevin) and great-grandson Cole, Ariel Zeiger, Erica Rands Howard (Terence), Nathan “Jake” Rands, Rocco N. Inneo, and Ian Costello.
He is predeceased by first wife, Deborah Zeiger and his beloved sister, Florence Cohen. His adored sister’s children Ruth Tatz (Mark), Scott Cohen and Andrea Cohen and their children also miss him dearly.
Chapel Service 1:15 pm on Friday, November 17th at McCracken Funeral Home 1500 Morris Avenue Union NJ, (908) 686-4700, under the direction of Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Memorial Chapel.
