Steve Hyman's Obituary
Steve Hyman, 85, of New York City and Boynton Beach, Fla., passed away on June 4. Survived by Sonia, his devoted wife of 47 years, and his loving daughter, Sandy Hyman-Mehaffey, he was the son of the late Nathan and Rose Rothenberg Hyman.
Born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx, he was the consummate New Yorker. Steve passed on his love of his city to his daughter, making Central Park, museums and theater her playground, including the iconic as well as the uncelebrated neighborhood spots and events that held magical experiences for them both. Loving and protective, he gave so much not only to the little girl he adored, but to all who had the good fortune to come into his life. He relished opera and operetta, singing in Gilbert and Sullivan productions as a student. A veteran of the Korean War, a baker, a salesman, a designer and finally a business owner, he built a life that he was able to enjoy in his retirement years. A great wit, inventive and analytical, artistic and musical, generous and gracious, he had a reputation for being the ultimate organizer and problem-solver. He could fix anything – a talent he shared with, and with whom he loved working beside on projects, his late son-in-law, Jack Mehaffey. He will be intensely missed by family and friends, including nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry; and sisters-in-law.
A memorial service was held on June 7 at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Rd., Boynton Beach, FL 33437. To honor his life, memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah Stem Cell Research or the American Diabetes Association.
