I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Chef Steven Tart. Steve was a great guy, and a GREAT Chef. He earned the respect and friendship of many, from Rochester, to his tenure with Rapoport’s Restaurant Group in Boca/Delray, to his recent Stateside Sandwiches, which he opened in Boca Raton. Stateside Sandwiches was absolutely incredible, and truly unique -- in fact, it was my favorite restaurant in town! As a Food Critic and culinary columnist for over 25 years, I don’t make this statement lightly.

You’ll never find a better Pastrami Sandwich anywhere -- with Steve’s house-smoked pastrami, sliced to order, served on a grilled thick marble rye! As I said in my review, Chef Steve didn’t just put together sandwiches – he made “gourmet meals on bread.” The restaurant was well on its way to success, until the CV Pandemic forced the shutdown of all restaurants, along with most of the nearby businesses.

We’ll all miss Steve’s humble kindness and tireless dedication to his craft -- and of course, his food.
(I may never be satisfied with another pastrami sandwich again!)

Steve, I will miss you. I am sorry that I did not make the trip down to see your Sandwich Shop. I know you were proud of it. Steve and I go back a long ways. While we lost in touch with each other, he was an instrumental part of my life. I came to this country in 1990, and joined RIT. Steve happened to be one of the first person that I ran into as we lived on the same floor in the dorms. Steve was like a brother to me, he helped me get acclimated to this new world. We spent most of our time together in the dorms. Tetris was how we passed our time. That following year Steve and I moved in together at an off campus apartment. It was the place to be and be seen. See this place had it own built in bar. We both enjoyed a cocktail or two back then. Something Steve and I tried our hardest to keep stocked. It was known for the best parties and often were told to shut it down. The following year Steve and i moved into the now famous St. Johns residence. See during the summer I had already moved into this house and when it came time to find a fall roommate, i could not think of anyone better to live with than Steve. See Steve was a great cook back then and you would be a fool not to want to room with a great cook. Steve introduced me to his famous Tuna Sandwich. It was like watching a master at work. He loved making sandwiches. But more importantly Steve loved cooking for others. That is how he showed his love. I remember going through different jobs and then one day getting my first real job at The Lodge at WoodCliff. Steve soon followed suit and joined as a cook. He quickly rose to being one of the favorite culinary talents at WoodCliff. Steve never shied away from hard work. And he could have returned to Woodmere, Long Island, anytime he wanted, he wanted to show everyone that he was good at this thing called Cooking. Imagine living in a house where the three roommates, by now Ken Perry had joined the party as well, all worked at the same place. You really had to enjoy each other to make that work. I finally moved away from Rochester, and only made it back to once to visit Steve. When Steve was working on his new concept for a Sandwich Shop, he and I communicated a couple of times, he was so proud of being able to do this and stay close to home.

Steve thank you for your friendship, your love and helping me be who i am today. I could not have done it if I did not stand your shoulders every now and then.

I met Steve about 10 years ago when he was the Purchasing Manager and Executive Chef for the Rapoport Group. Our business relationship quickly turned into a friendship that remained intact up until his passing. We had a fun time mostly chatting and texting about sports and just about everything going on in life. We listened to each other when we needed an ear. He was always very encouraging and kind.
I sure will miss him and his banter about Tom Brady as he called him "TBS" as he knew my passion for my Boston sports teams. There will definitely be a void in my life with him gone. RIP my friend. I will miss you!!

Uncle Steve as we fondly called him was a gentle giant. Ken Perry introduced me to him when we started dating and we had MANY great times together in Rochester and also when he came to Georgia to hang with us! Uncle Steve was funny, loved eating great food and above all he was so very kind. We will miss him so very much. His passing has left a whole in our hearts.

We love you buddy always and forever!!!
