Decency, reliability, honor, dignity, and respect: these are steadfast qualities that Syd not only held in high esteem, but practiced every day during a long life that has been well lived.
Syd was a straightforward man who demanded little from those around him, and who expected only the best for his wife, Hedda, and their two children, Sharon and Jon. .
To me, Syd’s finest quality was his patience: an inherent ability to listen, to absorb and to offer a point of view based on quiet, measured wisdom. He always blended his advice with humor which made everyone appreciate his wisdom.
In short, Syd was a kindhearted ‘mench’ with a generous spirit and an authentic love for people. He was always a happy and disciplined man with a great smile who, given half the chance, never resisted the opportunity to laugh with friends and family.
Hedda and Syd, who ironically met at a funeral in the early 1950’s, raised a family, and remained happily married for over half a century. Quite a remarkable achievement.
Syd was a handsome character whose reassuring presence we all felt during good and difficult times. Syd lived a long and happy life, and only succumbed to ill health at the very end. It’s difficult to imagine him not being around and each of us will cope with his absence in our own way. I will miss him.
As you gather here tomorrow to remember Syd and to commemorate his life, let’s bid him farewell as we mourn our heartfelt loss of a lively, dignified soul who brought joy, humor, and happiness to so many, and whose legacy will live on with each of us.
My very best to everyone who had the privilege to know Syd.
