Virginia S Walzer's Obituary
Virginia “Ginger” Sarah Walzer, aged 89, of Boynton Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on December 25, 2022. Virginia was born on December 26, 1932 to Frank and Eva Urish in New York, New York. She grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey during the Great Depression. Virginia and her older sister Martha were the best of friends. As a young girl, Virginia attended a special school for children with polio. Virginia persevered with positivity and grace. She gained strength that surprised her doctors, going on to dance and swim. From a young age, her gift of music was evident. She was an accomplished pianist, who as a child performed in a recital at Carnegie Hall. After graduating high school, Virginia worked as a secretary for several Fortune 500 companies and law firms in New York City.
She met Milton Walzer, her husband of 68 years, when she competed in a Queen Esther beauty pageant at a local temple. She bedazzled the crowd and won Milton’s heart that night. They wed in 1954 and went on to have four children, Evelyn (d. 2015), Andrew (d. 2022), Susan, and Robert. They raised their family in Orangeburg and Tappan, New York. Virginia and Milton loved to travel, visiting Europe and Israel. They often spent their summers with their extended family at Lake Hopatcong or in the Catskills Mountains.
Virginia was an active parent who could often be found bringing in cupcakes and playing music for her children’s classmates. She co-led her daughters’ girl scout troops and always volunteered to assist during field trips. She was an active member of the Orangetown Jewish Center Sisterhood and Hadassah chapters, attending many social events and helping with fundraising efforts. Although busy raising four children, Virginia still found time to attend college courses in the evening. She embraced the Women’s Movement of the 1970s and returned to the work force as a school bus driver, a position that allowed her to stay close to her children. When her children were older, she resumed her career as a Secretary for Western Union, where she worked until she retired. Virginia and Milton moved to The Grove in Bonyton Beach, Florida in 1995, where she embraced retirement. She was well known in her community through her involvement at the Mandel Jewish Community Center, her volunteer work at the Morkami Museum and Gardens, and her many piano recitals. You could often find her talking with neighbors at the Grove’s pool, out to eat with friends, painting in watercolors, enjoying the beach, or attending a class at the JCC. Virginia will be fondly remembered for her kind spirit, happy disposition, innate artistic abilities, appreciation of music, and love of her family.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, sister Martha Glaser, brother-in-law Robert Glaser, daughter Evelyn Walzer, and son Andrew Walzer.
Virginia is survived by her husband Milton Walzer, daughter Susan Bossert (Peter (d. 2010)), son Robert Walzer (Barbie), grandchildren Thomas Bossert, Haley Bolton (Jamie), Melissa Walzer-Tan, (Roger), Benjamin Walzer (Janie), Dr. Lauren Walzer (Andrew Hennessy), Dr. Arielle Walzer (Matt Schulman), Romina Columbo, Joshua Rowe-Heupler (Mariel), Samwise Rowe, and Ryan Rowe, great grandchildren Amelia, Madeline, Erik, Max, Owen, and Ella, and sisters-in-law Muriel Cohen and Helen Walzer.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 29th, 2022 at 1pm at G.A.R Cemetery Snohomish, Washington (8601 Riverview Road, Snohomish, WA 98290). Memorial contributions in Virginia's honor can be made to Hadassah of Palm Beach County, FL, an organization that Virginia strongly supported.
